Environmental Studies
These environmental studies dissertation examples are student-contributed and cover environmental issues through a wider social lens than environmental science alone. Environmental studies is typically interdisciplinary, so dissertations often combine policy, politics, economics, behaviour, and ethics with evidence about environmental impacts. Students tend to focus on how decisions are made, who holds power, and why well-known problems persist despite targets and public concern.
Common dissertation directions include climate policy and adaptation at local level, energy transition choices, transport and planning, waste and consumption, food systems, and the governance of water, land, and biodiversity. Many projects examine implementation gaps: what happens between a strategy document and real-world delivery, how regulation is enforced (or not), and what incentives shape business and household behaviour. Inequality is a frequent theme, looking at who is most exposed to pollution, heat, flooding, or fuel poverty, and how funding rules and political priorities determine who gets protected first. Communication and public engagement also features heavily, including risk perception, misinformation, climate anxiety, and how narratives influence support for policies like road pricing, home retrofits, or dietary change. Methods commonly include policy analysis, case studies, interviews, surveys, and evaluation of local programmes.
These examples can help you narrow to a workable topic and see how students connect environmental evidence to governance and social outcomes.
