Linguistic Politeness
This study attempts to identify politeness strategies employed by authors in economic journal communities for both local and international economic journals.
These linguistics dissertation examples are student-contributed and focus on analysing language with clear methods and evidence – from sound patterns and grammar to meaning, interaction, and social context. Many projects combine theory with data, showing how linguists justify claims using recordings, corpora, experiments, or structured text analysis.
Popular directions include sociolinguistics (language variation, identity, style-shifting, language attitudes, dialect contact), often using interviews, perception tasks, or community corpora. Phonetics and phonology dissertations commonly examine vowel shifts, prosody, speech perception, or accent features, sometimes using acoustic analysis and listener judgments. In syntax and semantics, students may test how grammatical structures pattern across varieties or languages, or how meaning changes with context, quantifiers, modality, and ambiguity.
A large set of topics sits in pragmatics and conversation analysis – turn-taking, repair, politeness, humour, stance, and how power shows up in everyday talk, institutional settings, or online interaction. Corpus linguistics projects are also common, tracking collocation, register, keywords, framing, and diachronic change in news, politics, health communication, or social media. Many dissertations connect linguistics to real-world applications: forensic linguistics (authorship, deception, police interviews), language acquisition (bilingualism, classroom interaction, feedback), and computational linguistics (sentiment, topic modelling, machine translation quality, bias in language technologies).
Strong projects usually define a tight dataset and a single analytic lens, then build the argument around patterns the data can actually support.

There are both cognitive (working memory, intelligence, attention to name a few) and social factors (such as education, motivation and age) that contribute to successful SLA. This dissertation focuses on the cognitive aspects.
