Internet
These internet dissertation examples are student-contributed and cover how online life actually works — technically, socially, and politically. Students often focus on one internet space (a platform, community, app type, or infrastructure layer) and then examine how design choices and governance shape behaviour, harm, opportunity, and trust.
Common dissertation directions include platform governance and content moderation, online communities and subcultures, misinformation and virality, and how people judge credibility in fast-moving information environments. Many projects explore privacy and data use, including tracking, profiling, consent journeys, children’s online experiences, and how users interpret “personalisation” and targeted content. Another major theme is access and exclusion: broadband and device access, digital skills, accessibility, language barriers, and how “digital by default” services can widen gaps. Students also examine online harms such as harassment and abuse, scams and fraud, and the ways reporting and enforcement systems succeed or fail for users. More technical or policy-led dissertations may look at cyber risk, platform security, online identity, or how regulation and enforcement operate when harms are cross-border and spread quickly.
These examples can help you choose a clear focus — for example online trust, moderation, privacy, digital exclusion, or platform power — and see how students research internet behaviour using interviews, surveys, content analysis, digital ethnography, or data-led approaches.
