Geography
These geography dissertation examples are student-contributed and cover how places are shaped by people, economies, environments, and power. Geography dissertations often split into human geography (society, cities, migration, inequality), physical geography (landforms, climate, hazards), or a mix of both where environmental change meets lived experience.
Common directions include urban change and regeneration, housing and neighbourhood inequality, transport access and mobility, and how communities experience policing, public space, and local services. Many students research environmental risk and adaptation at local scale: flooding, coastal erosion, heatwaves and urban overheating, air quality, and how councils prioritise protection when budgets are tight. Climate justice and vulnerability are frequent themes, looking at which groups and neighbourhoods are most exposed and least supported. Physical geography topics often include rivers and catchments, coastal processes, erosion and sediment movement, landslides, and how landscapes respond to changing rainfall and land use. Methods typically include GIS and mapping, spatial statistics, fieldwork and sampling, interviews and focus groups, surveys, and case studies using local datasets.
These examples can help you choose a specific place-based question and see how students connect evidence (maps, field data, policy, lived experience) to clear conclusions about what drives change and what could improve outcomes.
