Post-Roman European Cultural and Economic Development
An archaeological overview of the socio-cultural and economic developments of the first post-Roman North-West European Union communities under the ‘Frankish’ rulers between 700-950.
These European studies dissertation examples are student-contributed and cover contemporary issues shaping Europe as a region, a set of institutions, and a political and cultural space. Students in European studies often connect what the EU and European states decide with what people and organisations experience — in markets, borders, rights, security, and everyday life.
Common dissertation directions include EU governance and institutions (how policy is made, negotiated, and enforced), political change within member states, and the tensions between national sovereignty and collective rules. Many projects examine Europe’s security and geopolitical position, including defence cooperation, energy security, sanctions, and the role of NATO and neighbouring regions. Economic themes often include single market rules, trade and regulatory alignment, competition and industrial policy, and how crises reshape public expectations and political legitimacy. Students also research migration and borders, asylum systems, human rights protections, and how narratives about identity and belonging shape policy choices. Other dissertations focus on climate and energy transition, digital regulation, and the politics of enlargement and neighbourhood relations. For UK-focused students, there are also strong angles on post-Brexit UK–EU cooperation and divergence without making the dissertation “about Brexit” alone.
These examples can help you choose a clear Europe-focused question with a manageable country or policy scope.
