This Is Clearly Seen In The British Tourist Industry After The Terrorist ...

This is clearly seen in the British tourist industry after the terrorist attack of July 7, 2005; the cancellations of reservations in British hotels resulted in the cancellations of airway reservations and influenced national and international businesses.
Thus, it is obvious that the terrorists intended to influence the domestic economy of Great Britain to inspire people's opposition to the British government. However, if British authorities and tourist organisations introduce new security measures and ensure tourists of safety, they will be able to overcome the consequences of the terrorist act by the end of 2007. As the frequency of terrorist attacks causes longer-term consequences than the seriousness of the attacks (Pizam & Fleischer, 2002), the British tourist industry will recover in a short period of time, if no further terrorist attacks occur in London. As Pizam (1999) points out, the more frequent the criminal/violent acts occur the greater is their impact on tourism [C]rimes and violence at tourist destinations that occur at infrequent intervals will have a negative impact for only a short duration (p.9). In view of this notion, it is obvious that if terrorist attacks vanish in the future, the British tourist industry will renew and even increase its income in the period of two years. According to Hall (1994), the earlier evidence indicates that tourism can recover rapidly following the cessation of conflict (p.94). Great Britain, unlike such countries as Egypt or Indonesia, is a stable and developed country that has funds to overcome the consequences of the terrorist attacks. It is unlikely that the country's economy will be greatly affected by this tragedy; Britain's economy is manifold and it does not depend only on the tourist industry. World Tourist Council (WTC) considers that Great Britain will be able to spend 470 million pounds to intensify security measures in airways, hotels, and transport.

However, the decline in the British tourist industry will continue until foreign tourists regain their confidence in the country's safety. As Gurtner (2004) rightfully claims, risk, whether real or perceived, remains a strong determinant in the decision making process of the travelling public (p.62). But, taken into account the infrequent nature of the occurred terrorist attacks in London (at least from the side of Muslims), British authorities hope that 2012 Olympic Games will greatly increase the country's tourist and travel industry. On the other hand, it is early to predict the long-term consequences of the terrorist attacks in London on the British tourist industry. Despite the attempts of British authorities and mass media to ensure safety for foreign visitors, tourists continue to avoid arriving to London for a long period of time.
