Chapter 3: Literature Review
3 Introduction
Before investigating the subject of this paper in depth, it was felt appropriate to provide a deeper understanding of the tourism experience, its importance as an industry, in particular to the Hong Kong economy, the demands of the tourist and the way that such demands are or should be met by the provider. Finally, the tourism policy objectives between China and Hong Kong will be reviewed to evaluate how it addresses the other issues outlined in this chapter.
The importance of tourism to Hong Kong
As Buhalis and Costa (2006, p.1) write in their introduction, tourism is now the world's largest industry, and is critical for areas of the world that find it difficult to develop alternative industries. In the past, this would have included China. Over the past three decades, tourism's impact upon national and international economies throughout the world has increased significantly on a global scale, partially due to the development of the technology era, which provides for better communication and freedom of choice, and due to the expansion of reduced cost transportation including cheap flights. Despite some setbacks, such as was caused after the bombing of the Twin towers in New York, this growth has shown little sign of abating. Tourism is currently forecast to be responsible for around 12% of the global GDP and the industry is expected to employs in excess of two hundred million jobs globally by the year 2010, although many of those are within the lower wage bracket. In addition to workers employed within the travel and tourism industry, there are also jobs created span a wide spectrum of industries including manufacturing, retail, construction and the service sector. (World-tourism, 2006)
Tourism also plays an important role in assisting growth of regional economies. In fact, in 1992 UNCED recognised travel and tourism as an economic sector that aided such areas to achieve sustained growth.
