MAG also realises that the company's policies, procedures and plans can significantly affect not just the lives of people and ecosystems in surrounding areas but also of the emission of greenhouse gases at a global level. The UK, as a signatory to the Kyoto protocol and a responsible global leader has undertaken to achieve stiff air pollution targets and MAG, as a responsible public corporation, is duty bound to take steps to help in achieving these objectives. In its Vision for Sustainability, (2007) the company has publicly recognised the challenges it faces from the growth in demand for air travel, which is presently around 5 % per year globally, limited environmental capacity, increasingly rigorous policies and legislation and meeting public expectations.
MAG is publicly committed to a number of activities aimed at controlling or rectifying the negative impact of airports. Some of its important commitments that have a direct bearing on the environment, the surroundings of Manchester Airport and the local community are bulleted below.
Work in partnership with airport staff, the local community, service partners, suppliers, regulators, government and the business community
Seek to prevent water pollution and risk of harm to aquatic environment from anti icing operations of runways, aprons and aircraft, as well as from servicing of aircraft.
Minimise use of hazardous and toxic materials, encourage use of less damaging products and ensure adequate protection measures to contain risk to environment
Monitor air quality carefully and meet legislative requirements.
Ensure introduction and adoption of strategies aiming to fulfil the UK's commitment to reduce CO2 emission by 20 % by 2010.
Build public private partnerships to further use of public transport and reduce congestion by private vehicles.
Seek to contain and manage the noise impact arising from our activities and those of our business partners, in accordance with our formal undertakings. (Vision for Sustainability, 2007)
The company has brought out a number of Sustainability Reports, the latest one available on the internet being that prepared for 2002-03. The report is far more detailed than the vision statement and elaborates objectives and targets, as well as action already under implementation. MAG realises the enormity of the problems confronting it and is trying to take action in many areas, including the funding of relevant research and enunciation of specific corporate objectives in the area of environmental protection and control. The company has undertaken to fund the Chair of Sustainable Aviation at the Manchester Metropolitan University and supports research work in areas of environment, and sustainability in meeting aviation needs.
