Research data
It has been decided to approach the research for this study by the method of undertaking case studies. The case studies in this instance are two in number, the first being a case study relating to the Guangdong Province and the second being Hong Kong. The case study approach allows for the collection of actual research and statistical data from a number of secondary sources. This contains data on a wide range of issues, including the geographic, demographic and commercial structure of the areas being studied, and enables a factual based examination.
The research material gathered and studied from the research material outlined above has enabled us to provide a much more detailed understanding of the reasons for the strategies that the Hong Kong Tourist Board has chosen as they seek to take economic advantage of the freedom enjoyed by the consumers of Guangdong. Because of this, we have been able to achieve a more accurate analysis and better evaluate the information.
Guangdong Province
In terms of the Guangdong Province, to produce a case study it was necessary to research the demographic, political and structural changes that had taken place, as well as the information regarding its current economic position. The work of Kathryn Winsted (1997) reveals just how different providing a service within two distinct and separate cultures can be, and explains that the behavioural differences often can be confusing for both the service provider and the tourism consumer. It also addresses the issue of how it is necessary to explain to the consumer that these differences exist. Philip Pearce (2005) also approaches the subject from the provider's viewpoint, explaining the methods that the provider should use to address the complex motivational issues of the tourist consumer, and the ways in which the correct approach to the matter can help to reduce potential difference, therefore increasing the level of consumer satisfaction.
In addition to the study of textbooks and journals, Statistical data from a range of sources was studied and evaluated by comparison with similar data from other sources. This information was researched and collected, both from the internal resources available within China's own tourism business database, and from external organisations such as the US Census bureau, the WTO (World Trade Organisation) and other national and international tourism organisations. Once this had all been correlated, it was then possible to construct a detailed overview of the tourism and economic situation within the province.
Hong Kong
For the Hong Kong case study, the collection of research data concentrated upon the tourism industry itself, rather than the demographics of the region.
