THE IMPACTS OF 2005 BOMBINGS IN LONDON ON TOURISM
2006
Abstract
The present research investigates in depth the impacts of 2005 Bombings in London on tourism and the British tourist industry. The data analysis is conducted on the basis of the Crisis Event Forecasting Model and applies to the quantitative and qualitative research methods. The received findings demonstrate a minor (2%) decline in the British tourist and travel industry in the years of 2006-2007, with a gradual renewal of the previous figures by the year of 2008. As the occurred terrorist attacks are infrequent in Great Britain, they will negatively influence the economic indices of the British tourist industry only on a short-term basis. Thus, some findings of this research correspond with the previous studies and investigations of tourism (e.g. Pizam, 1999; Enders, Sandler & Paris, 1992; Wall, 1996), while other assumptions are new.

British authorities considered that this terrorist attack was connected with the summit of the leading powers and was aimed against the British involvement in the warfare in Afghanistan and Iraq. Applying to this terrorist act, Al-Qaeda intended to undermine the British economy, as was just the case with other terrorist attacks in Spain, the USA and Bali that dramatically influenced the economies of these countries.
