Elaborate systems and procedures, instituted by the company, aim to check the noise levels of departing aircraft, provide regular information feedback to airline companies, ensure the use of defined routes by departing aircraft and levy operational penalties in case of breach of limits. The company provides grants for insulating properties near the airport from excessive noise, while the fines collected for breach of stipulated noise levels are donated to the Manchester Community Trust. This, of course, is in addition to the substantial grants that the MAG provides to the trust every year.
Efforts to improve air quality include the provisioning of electrical power to run the electrical systems of parked aircraft, monitoring emission levels of motorised vehicles in the airport and the progressive use of gas powered vehicles inside the airport. The MAG has put a green commuting plan in place for local residents, which apart from encouraging reduction in use of petrol and diesel vehicles, also motivates citizens to use bicycles or public transport for commuting. Generation and disposal of waste, another area of major concern in airport projects, is tackled with a multidimensional approach, namely, careful purchasing, reduction of wastage, reuse of materials where possible, segregation and recycling, and lastly, responsible disposal. (Sustainability Report, 2003) The company also has an elaborate water management system that ensures drainage, treatment and disposal of waste water as well as spills.
Apart from specific programmes in research, waste and water management, and noise and pollution control, the company works in a number of other areas related to environmental protection. These, inter alia, include an elaborate outreach effort programme with the local community, efficient use of the land in its possession and a vortex damage scheme. 4. Conclusion and Recommendations
The last two decades, especially the period that commenced with the falling of the iron curtain and the disintegration of the Soviet Union, has been one of sharp growth in global business, and international travel and tourism. The accompanying growth in international and domestic travel has led to vastly increased pressure on existing airports. This is equally true of the UK, which has emerged as a global hub for business in high end services, retail and tourism. A number of major airports in the UK are in various stages of expansion, in anticipation of further increases in passengers, freight and flights.
The establishment of new airports, and expansion of existing ones, can significantly affect the surrounding environment, as well as the lives of people who live in nearby areas.
