Even though much work remains, significant improvements in addressing mental health problems, in the community, have led to some relief at the ground level. The fact that the country is currently recording its lowest levels of suicides is possibly an indication of the beneficial effects of improvements in this area.
It is essential, in the interests of equity and fairness, that the benefits available to ordinary citizens become available to all classes of society. The standards of medical assistance for patients with mental health problems available in the community are unfortunately not available in the many prisons scattered over the UK. When compounded by factors like the much higher incidence of mental ailments, the different lifestyles of prisoners, and the administrative and security requirements of prisons, this results in aggravation of ailments in primary stages, and in the lack of proper treatment for people with advanced and difficult diseases. Apart from the basic inhumanity inherent in such situations, it also leads to release of people with aggravated mental problems. These people have greater difficulty in re-entering normal life and the probability of their committing repeat offences, which usually entails stricter sentencing, is much higher. (Maden, 2003)
c. Objective and Purpose
I wish to delve into the conditions of prisoners with mental health problems in prisons in the UK, examine, and analyse the areas of adequacy and deficiency of treatment and support facilities, particularly in comparison with those available to members of the general community. Whatever I have read on the subject has left me deeply disturbed and with a feeling that all of us are participating in a wrong act towards unfortunate people. An investigation of the nature of work handled by health care workers, both specialists and support staff, as well as their levels of training and competence should be especially useful in focusing on areas that need correction. While the purpose of my assignment is to investigate the subject in detail, and arrive at findings, conclusions and recommendations that could help in further research and in the formulation of next steps, some recommendations could possibly be taken at local prison administration levels, and help in providing quick relief.

Research for this dissertation progresses on the base of certain specific research questions, which form its core, and provide the framework for the broad parameters and boundaries for investigation.
