Victims of Elder Abuse
Prepared by Date
Abstract
Elder abuse is a widespread and under recognised social evil that disadvantages elderly people from living their last years with respect and dignity. It causes long lasting suffering and hardship for people who have contributed greatly towards the well being and prosperity of their offspring and deserve to be treated in like manner. The rights of older people to live with dignity, safety, and to participate normally in community life, are undeniable and need nurturing and protection.
The actual situation is however drastically different and elder people suffer from various types of abuse that makes their lives unpleasant, unsafe and extremely difficult. There has been reluctance, at individual, national, and global levels, to recognise the problem and adopt measures to control and correct it. However, attitudes have begun to change and the magnitude of the issue is slowly making itself evident. Social researchers have begun to study the problem, its complexities and consequences in real earnest.
This research assignment attempts to delve into the issue in depth by examining the literature currently available, as well as three pieces of original research on the subject, (conducted by social scientists and social service agencies), and by doing so arrive at the reasons behind the phenomenon and focus on measures that could help in improving the situation.

1. Introduction
a. Overview
Elder abuse has always existed in human society, cloaked in shame and kept beyond public gaze, both by its perpetrators and its victims. Human society, civilised and aboriginal, has never had time for its old, finding it convenient to confine its unhappy and under privileged elders shrouded in invisibility. Western culture, especially American, has traditionally idolised youth, health, agility, and good looks, all attributes much at variance with old age.
