e. Structure
I have attempted to structure the dissertation into separate sections in order to deal with the objectives of the thesis and the research questions in a progressive and logical manner. As such, this introductory section is followed by an outlining of the research methodology, which is based on extensive study and detailing of the various material accessed for the purpose of the assignment. The material studied has been structured into four sections, namely, Historical Progression of Mental Health Issues in Society and Prisons, Overview of Prisoners with Mental Health Problems in the UK, Current Conditions in UK Prisons and their Impact on Prisoners with Mental Ailments, Unmet Mental Health Needs in Prison, and Current Initiatives.
The concluding chapter deals with the findings and analysis of the material studied as well as my recommendations on the subject.

2. Methodology and Limitations
a. Methodology
My dissertation deals with an issue that is dependent upon the condition of individuals and the effect of their environments. While mental health problems have always existed in society, they have become a focus of concern in recent years. The situation becomes magnified many times for prison inmates primarily because of the many administrative factors involved in their functioning. The subject matter is vast, and detailed investigation should preferably cover extensive study of literature on the subject, from both primary and secondary sources, as well as the use of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, to be truly comprehensive. An exercise of such substantial proportions is beyond my reach, both, in terms of time and infrastructural support, and I have restricted the scope of my study to detailed study of material, available from different sources in physical and electronic form. Materials studied comprise of textbooks, journal and magazine articles available on the subject, websites of the Department of Health and the NHS, the findings of reports carried out by social researchers and other agencies appointed by the government, as well as a study of police records on the treatment of mentally challenged persons in custody, current prison service regulations, and related literature. While most of the materials I have accessed refer to conditions in British jails, literature available on American prisons becomes useful for purposes of comparison and analysis. The literature available has been analysed for answers to the formulated research questions to arrive at findings, conclusions and recommendations. I have arranged the literature review in separate successive sections to enable clear progression in study and analysis, followed by the drawing of conclusions.
