The Reader's Engagement With The Scripture Is Existential In The Deepest ...

The reader's engagement with the Scripture is existential in the deepest sense. The words of the Bible not only serve as a mirror, for Kierkegaard, but also as call for imitation. We read the Scriptures to see ourselves and to become increasingly like God. Kierkegaard knew that people must resonate personally with the Biblical story; otherwise, it has little effect on their lives. This personal resonance, however, is not something placed upon the Scriptures. Instead, the Scriptures hold a unique hold on the human condition that calls out our sin and calls out for our redemption. It is, simply, impossible to understand Kierkegaard properly apart from his presence in light of the Bible. For Kierkegaard, the Bible was the centerpiece of the Christian life. This has been affirmed throughout the centuries by Christians in varying degrees, but is bolstered by the life and thought of Søren Kierkegaard.
