Arrangement of Chapters
Chapter 1 of this dissertation will introduce the aim and background that provides the rational for this study. This chapter will discuss the incidence and prevalence of postnatal depression and PTSD. Chapter 2 describes the methods used to collect the relevant articles for critical review. The concept of reliability will also be discussed. As mentioned chapter 3 will critically review the chosen research studies on postnatal debriefing. The effect of the debriefing interventions on the symptoms of trauma, depression, anxiety and confidence about future pregnancies will be discussed. Debriefing service provision will also be reviewed for the reasons already mentioned. Chapter 4 discusses the findings within the context of any relevant contemporary literature. Again, comparisons will be made with other literature in relation to any possible benefit of postnatal debriefing and future research directions will be suggested. This dissertation concludes in chapter 5, summarising the findings of the critical review. Finally the appendices that are labelled A to H contain mini critiques on the research articles chosen for review. In this section the design, data collection methods, sample size, ethical considerations and research aims will be addressed and critically appraised for any limitations and credibility. It is important to note that critical in this sense means that the studies reviewed will be scrutinised in an unbiased way for their strengths and weaknesses, not just for any mistakes (Polit & Beck, 2003, p147).

Chapter 1
Introduction
1.1 Aim
The aim of this dissertation is to ascertain whether the debriefing of women postnatally is effective in preventing or reducing the symptoms of postpartum emotional distress, particularly symptoms of postnatal depression, anxiety, trauma and PTSD.
1.2 Background
It is proposed that to most women the process of childbirth is a natural life event that brings joy and fulfilment. However, arguably, the time of childbirth can be one of massive turmoil, doubt, helplessness and change for parents where nothing can be taken for granted. Parents, particularly women might experience overpowering, insurmountable feelings that they often cannot understand.
