Qualitative Research A Phenomenological Qualitative Study Was Conducted ...

Qualitative research
A phenomenological qualitative study was conducted first in order to gather the experiences of independent researchers in a slightly structured interactive interview that would allow for interpretation of data based on themes. Myers (2002, p. 11) states, The ultimate aim of qualitative research is to offer a perspective of a situation and provide well-written research reports that reflect the researcher's ability to illustrate or describe the corresponding phenomenon. One of the greatest strengths of the qualitative approach is the richness and depth of explorations and descriptions.
Ten independent recruiters were contacted by postal letter (see Appendix A) with a request to participate in a brief interview. Of the ten initially contacted, when followed up by phone to set the appointment, eight of the ten were willing to participate. Of the two who did not participate, both cited scheduling conflicts. At the time of the interview, all eight were presented with a waiver with assurance of anonymity (see Appendix B) and authorization to tape record the interview that each participant signed prior to engaging in the interview.
Participants in the qualitative portion of the study were asked 11 questions (see Appendix C). Interview recordings were transcribed and are included in Appendix D. Interview themes were identified, as were similarities and consistencies in answers.
Interviews were conducted in the office or home office of each independent consultant. In order to gain the maximum participation rate, interviews were arranged to last approximately 20 - 30 minutes. Each interview was conducted in the same manner to minimize moderator effects. Following a greeting, the project was explained to the each participant a second time, participants were presented with the waiver for signature and once signed, the tape recorder was turned on and the interview began. Each participant was asked the same set of 10 questions in the same order. On average, they lasted 23 minutes. There were no unforeseen problems or issues that affected the outcome.
Quantitative research
According to Hopkins (2000), quantitative research is based on applying statistics to determine relationships between variables, the results of which can be generalized to a specific population. This portion of the study was conducted as a cross-sectional descriptive quantitative study.
Qualitative participants were each instructed to recruit between 15 20 corporate recruiters in England to serve as quantitative participants. With eight qualitative participants, the 160 possible quantitative participants were possible. One hundred and thirty five participants filled out the online questionnaire completely, although the total count of visitors to the site was 175.
