Literature Review
This literature review was conducted in two steps. Initially, a search of the Highbeam online article database was conducted to identify those articles of interest dealing with recruitment and WOM. Search strings used include recruitment and word of mouth yielding 1186 hits from all sources. When this result was limited to magazines and peer reviewed journals, the selection was reduced to 517. This was a broad search and included recruitment from other genres such as medicine and advertising. Using a search string recruitment methods the result was 19,158 hits. Limiting that string to magazines and peer reviewed journal articles reduced this to 11,871 hits. Refining the search with the term UK produced 1,907 hits, further refining the search string again to recruitment methods, UK and employment limited to magazines, and peer reviewed journal articles produced 547 hits. The same scenario on a Google Scholar search produced 2,980 hits. From the hits obtained, abstracts were reviewed to assess appropriateness. Inclusion criteria included articles that were written in English, were published in peer-reviewed journals and were written by experts in the field (as noted by their titles) and were published within the last 15 years. From a review of the abstracts, relevant articles that contributed to the comprehensive nature of the literature review were selected and articles themselves were retrieved for review and inclusion.
Literature reviews serve two primary purposes, both to inform and to provide a solid background from which to move forward in additional research without duplicating what has been performed and/or to use prior research and take it additional steps. In this instance, the use of a comprehensive literature review was utilized to provide background for the study as well as enlighten this researcher on questions for all participants in the study.
