It can also help turn useful data into information.
Other benefits of efficient networking tools are that: people can connect at one virtual point even though they may be physically scattered; and organisations can be managed from remote locations. The important thing about network computers is that they provide 24/7 access to the internet.
Problem areas
Computer networking is supposed to be a relatively easy and affordable way to connect with other computers and manage information. However as with everything in life apart from the benefits there will be a few problems. The main problematic issues arising out of computer networking are generally associated with software. Nonetheless some of the challenges facing the hardware aspect of network tools today are: thefts such as chip crime where processing chips are stolen one report in 1998 stated that an attaché case filled with computer chips could be worth as much as £500, 000 (Cleary 1998, p.59-100). Therefore it was suggested that these chips should be encrypted with password protected software rendering them either useless or very expensive to fix. Vandalism by disgruntled employees although minor is also another challenge; this is because in recent times employees who have been made newly redundant have been known to take out there disapproval on company equipment therefore many companies have now been instructed on the best practice procedure for such an event which would be to promptly escort the employee off the compound with the use of security personnel. Other minor challenges include unforeseen disasters such as fire and flood.
However the main focus of this research paper and the biggest challenge faced by network administrators is finding the right tools to prevent unauthorised access and corruption of data. This can come in many forms, from spam and junk mail (unauthorised access), to the more serious threats such as viruses, corporate theft and cyber terrorism (unauthorised access and corruption of data). Therefore the software which a network uses is of crucial importance to its functionality. It affects two core areas: efficiency and security.
Viruses
There are different classifications of viruses e.g.:
Trojan as the name would suggest these are sent under the guise of being useful information or software programs but after the information is downloaded the virus is unleashed and destroys files;
Time bomb viruses that are set to go off on a particular date; and
Resident viruses these are hidden in the computer's run time memory (RAM).
The most popular tool used to stop unauthorised accessed is the firewall. A firewall prevents unauthorised access by using proxy servers which is a remote computer not necessarily anywhere near the physical location of the company.
