Hence, there is a need to determine if the food and drink policy recommendations are indeed being complied with by the schools, as part of passing the criteria for healthy schools set by the Government healthy initiative schemes, through healthy eating policy development and implementation.
1.2 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to determine the existence of healthy food and drink policies during mid-morning break in the primary schools in South Wales. Additionally, this study will examine the scope of the implementation of such guidelines, including its main components, such as the specific food items that are allowed and banned for student consumption, the role of governing body, teachers, pupils and parents in policy development and implementation; and those guidelines that relate to tuck shop and vending machine operations. Thus, the specific aims and objectives of this study include the following:
1.2.1 Aims
To establish the extent to which food and drinks policies are implemented for mid-morning break in primary schools in South Wales.
To assess who is responsible for implementing such policies, and what food and/or drinks are restricted.
1.2.2 Objectives
To identify 100 primary schools in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.
To distribute a self-administered questionnaire to ascertain the percentage of schools which have a food and/or drink policy in place.
To carry out qualitative analysis to determine how the policies are developed.
To identify the types of food and drinks that are restricted.
To analyse results descriptively.
1.3 Research Question
This study primarily determines the existence and implementation of healthy food and drink policies during mid-morning breaks in primary schools in South Wales. It is expected that schools play a pivotal role in improving nutrition among students through the implementation of school-based nutrition programs. This leads to the following research question:
Researchers agree that the school environment is extremely important in providing both an education regarding nutrition and access to nutritious food (Buttress, 2005, Cheater, 2001). Although National Nutrition Standards (Department for Education and Skills, 2001), are compulsory in all schools across the UK, the standards only apply to school meals that are supplied by the establishment. Therefore, children who bring food and drink into school from home or buy food and drink at school remain vulnerable to the possibility of consuming a diet that is of poor composition if no policies are in place to regulate the type of food and drinks consumed. Much research to date has concentrated on the advantages of implementing food and drink policies rather than the extent to which policies occur in schools and who is responsible for their development.
