1.0 Introduction
As a student in one of the primary schools in South Wales, John looks forward to mid-morning break each day, delighted at the thought that at mid- morning break, he could have his fill of apples and milk, or his favorite sandwich and fruit juice, or strawberries and other healthy food items. His school offers free drinking water all day. The school tuck shop offers only healthy options and bans the sale of competitive snacks or junk foods and soft drinks. This has been largely the result of a school-wide effort of pupils like him, his teachers, the governing body and the parents. John's school is a healthy school as described by the Department of Health (2005, pp. 7-8), under the Healthy School Programme. The Healthy School Programme is a Government- implemented healthy initiative scheme developed in response to the deteriorating nutritional status of children in the UK, (Bowker, et.al., 1998; Reilly et.al., 1999; Revill, 2002; Butriss, 2006). The Healthy Eating component of Healthy School Programme recommends the development, implementation and monitoring of food and drink policies in schools, which encourage the sale and provision of healthier food and drink choices such as fruits, vegetables and fruit juice and free drinking water (Department of Health, 2005, p. 4). This program could be regarded as an effective tool to improve the health status of the children, since a varied and balanced diet is an important way of protecting health and promoting proper growth and development in children. In the long-term, good nutrition in childhood can prevent ill health in later life (The Department for Education and Skills, 2005). In the short-term, it can help children improve their concentration and cognitive performance (Whaley et al, 2003) and lead to fulfillment both inside and outside of school.
