An Investigation into Food and Drink Policies Implemented for Mid-morning Break in Primary Schools in South Wales

Abstract:
Background: There has been a deterioration of the nutritional status of children in the UK, (Bowler, et.al., 1998, Reilly, et.al., 1999, Welsh Health Survey, 2004, Office for National Statistics, 2006, Bower and Sandall, 2002, Revill, 2002, Buttris, 2006, Gregory et.al., 2000). The Government effectively responded to the problem by prescribing vigorous criteria for school-based nutrition programs such as the National Healthy Schools Programme which encourages schools to promote healthy eating by the development and implementation of healthy food and drink policies. The aim of this study was to establish the extent to which food and drinks policies are implemented for mid-morning break in primary schools in South Wales.
Methods: The survey was carried out by distributing questionnaires to 100 primary schools situated within Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. The data was collected in a suitable relational database, coded and analysed using the Statistical Programme for Social Scientists (SPSS) Package version 15.
Results: There were 52 primary schools in South Wales (94.5%) with existing policies on healthy food and drinks during mid-morning break. These policies include guidelines on tuck shops, provision for free drinking water, specific types of food and drink allowed for consumption and specific types of food that children can bring lunchboxes.
Conclusion: The results confirm the development and implementation of healthy food and drink policies for mid-morning break by primary schools in South Wales.
