Chapter 5: Open Access Laboratory Practical training in Kanban
From the discussion on JIT manufacturing and Kanban system/method in the previous chapter it is clear that the effectiveness of the overall manufacturing process is through reducing costs and delivering it to the customer in a timely fashion. This makes it clear that the teaching associated with the Kanban and practical exercises can be provided online on a university web-portal for open access. In this chapter an insight on the open access laboratory for the JIT implementation using Kanban is presented to the reader.
The research in this chapter explores the option of setting an open access laboratory for the JIT manufacturing in a university set-up. Furthermore, a practical session involving a four-member team for the assembly of a pressure valve plug used in high-pressure industrial boilers is presented to the reader. As it is clear that Kanban can be implemented using any IT software as well as using a rectangular sheet, the laboratory session will provide a high level of flexibility to the students in terms of implementing the plan of action for the inventory management using Kanban. From the arguments in the chapter 2 and 3 it is also clear that the demand for Kanban skills in the UK manufacturing industry will benefit the student community in the UK universities to understand and implement a practical Kanban session in order to understand concept in the industrial application of the concept.

ABC Corp is a leading manufacturer of high-pressure boiler and its spares in the European Union and the United States. The company's Manchester branch manufactures the pressure valve plug to cater the demand in the European high-pressure boiler market. The company's current manufacturing strategy is to produce a set amount of items and keep it in stock whilst increase the production to refill the stock that is being sold to the customers.
