To conduct a critical analysis on the LEAN implementation in developing countries of the Far East with focus on India.
To conduct a qualitative analysis on the research against the theories presented to answer the following research questions
Can LEAN be implemented across the world in its current form?
Can the business requirements and resource planning of an organization allow the customization of LEAN?
Will the concept of LEAN be useful for developing nations as the concept was initially conceived for developed nations?
What are the difficulties faced by companies in developed nations that prevent from implementing LEAN in many manufacturing organization?
What are the impacts of outsourcing and the implementation of LEAN in an organization competing from a developed nation both in the domestic and global market?
1.3: Research Scope
As the aim of the research is focused on the global position of the manufacturing industry and the role of LEAN, the research scope obviously takes a global form. In order to narrow the focus and ensure clarity in the research to measure against the research objectives, UK is chosen as the focus for a developed nation whilst India is chosen as the geography of focus under the developing nation.
1.4: Justification for research
The three major elements associated with the implementation of LEAN in an organization include Human Resource Management, Supply Chain Integration and Customer Relationship. The impact on the aforementioned with the implementation of LEAN is the driver for an organization to choose for or against the implementation of LEAN in its production process as argued by Peter Ward and Honggeng Zhou (2006). Alongside, the fact that the cultural, political, economic and technological factors have a tremendous effect on an organization's business operations and its positioning in a given target market (Gerry Johnson and Kevan Scholes, 2003), justifies that the implementation of LEAN is influenced by various macro and micro economic factors. This also leads to the argument that the LEAN implementation can be customised to meet the demands of the market forces thus ensuring an organization to perform effectively in the given target market. The aforementioned arguments along with the increasing use of outsourcing as an integral part of manufacturing justify the need for conducting academic research in this area to gain in-depth knowledge on the real-world application of the theories presented in textbooks.
1.5: Research Strategy
The research strategy corresponds to the nature of the research conducted. This research is purely dependant on the qualitative analysis mainly because of the vast geographies researched and the need for concrete information in terms of revenue generated and statistical data.
