While many studies have been carried out in this regard, there has been little changed over the years. While unskilled immigrant workers are paid a lower wage, there is need to research and uncover how much unskilled immigrant women are paid, given that indigenous working women in the UK have a history of being paid less than men. It is worth emphasizing on the issue of women's lower wages, as it is thought that such a difference in pay would almost certainly have an effect on how much unskilled women are paid (Blackwell and Guinea-Martin, 2005, 502514).
While women in the UK have traditionally been paid less than men, with lowered wages being offered, women would also suffer.
Certainly, a person's sex/gender should not have anything to do with how a person is paid; it is their work performance that has to be taken into consideration, nothing more and nothing less. Though it is largely felt that gender discrimination is the reason for differentials in wages, it does not really mean that the primary reason for men being worth more in their fields is discrimination. It must be taken into consideration that there are other factors as well. Backing this is up is the fact that laws such as the Equal Pay Act have not had complete success with seeking equal opportunities for women and men (Machin & Manning, 1994, 320-38).
Laws such as the Equal pay Act are ones that stand for justice regarding the gender wage differentials. It is supposed to ensure that all individuals regardless of their sex should be paid according to the work they produce. However, in spite of the Equal Pay Act women have still been paid less than men (Blackwell and Guinea-Martin, 2005, 502514).
World Population and the UK Labour Market:
This portion of the paper deals with the consideration that world population encompasses the UK labour market. The UK market has been increasingly experiencing changes in its work force due to the influx of immigrant workers as well as changes in its own population. The changes that the UK has been experiencing in its own population are similar to developed countries (LaLonde and Topel, 1991, 168198).
To begin with, the world's growing population is expected to reach a threatening level by 2050. Population growth is expected to decline in developed countries while it is expected to rise in developing countries. This shows that while population may decrease in the UK, there could be an increasing number of immigrant workers entering the UK labour market (LaLonde and Topel, 1991, 168198).
Important considerations in growing populations are demographic uncertainties. These will concern the whole planet for the next 50 years. Demographic uncertainties of main concern will be international migration and the structure of families. Some of these attributes are visible to an extent in the UK already.
