One That Is Great Importance Is The Influx Of Immigrant Workers That Creates ...

One that is great importance is the influx of immigrant workers that creates an imbalance in the system that indigenous workers are used to. Immigrant workers, especially the unskilled workers are seemingly given greater priority because employers can hire them on lower wages. This offsets the expectations of indigenous workers regarding a minimum wage. It is this issue of the minimum wage that is bothering most people in the UK (Dustmann, et al, 2005, F298F298).
Since employers of unskilled workers are keen on hiring immigrant workers on lower wages, it prevents indigenous workers from taking on work. At the same time, skilled workers tend to be paid reasonably well, regardless of where they are from [immigrant or indigenous]. It also must be asserted that there are still vacancies existing for the skilled and unskilled. The argument that there are no jobs does not hold true, as most literature reviewed, as well as statistics, point to a significant number of vacancies in the UK (Dustmann, et al, 2005, F298F298).
Apparently, among the unskilled indigenous workers in the UK labour market, there is a feeling of them being robbed of what they deserve. It is thought that something needs to be done on the governmental level in order to control the situation. France is looked at as an example in this case, as it has protected its labor market, and only accommodated skilled workers that it believes it can benefit from. The UK labour market seems to be encouraging more immigrant employees for companies to hire, as the economy benefits from lower wage immigrant workers. This situation is encouraging for immigrant workers, but may not be the same for indigenous workers. It is thought that a proper legal approach that enforces equal pay for all workers needs to be implemented in order to bridge the gap (Dobbs, 2006, 46). Given that employers have taxpaying indigenous workers and immigrant workers who will work for lower wages, there is no hesitation when employers decide whom to hire. This is particularly the case with hiring unskilled workers.
In addition to the choice that employers make regarding hiring immigrant or indigenous workers, there is a similar choice that is presented to them when they have female immigrant workers. Usually, immigrant female workers are paid less than male immigrant workers. This is worth comparing with the lower pay that female indigenous workers are paid as opposed to male indigenous workers. Clearly, there is an inequality existing in this regard, regardless of laws such as the Equal Pay Act, which was supposed to guarantee an equal minimum wage for all workers.
