This will ensure that the insulator itself is as minimally environmentally-damaging as possible and that the insulator functions as maximally as possible, ensuring it contributes to the overall reduction in CO2 emissions as far as possible.
Conclusions
Rigid board insulation is, as we have seen, an excellent insulator, with low embodied energy, and also has little environmentally-damaging material content, in terms of the material used to produce it. Polyurethane insulation seems, therefore, to be the perfect solution for housing's contribution to minimising global warming.
Chapter 5 Research Methodology
5.1 Introduction
This Chapter presents the Research Methodology, first reiterating the research aim, the objectives and the hypothesis of the dissertation, and then explaining the context for these. The Chapter then moves on to present the program of research, with a discussion of the primary and secondary data collection, with an indication of population and sample.
5.2 Statement of Aims of the Research
The aim of this dissertation is to understand the reasons behind the application of rigid board insulation in building projects, and its contribution to reducing CO2 emissions by investigation of the following: the concept of sustainable development and energy preservation; the UK Government's effort to tackle global warming issues with a focus on thermal insulation and, finally, embodied energy versus energy savings in rigid board insulations.

A copy of the full questionnaire can be found in the Appendix. The questionnaire was set out to be both easy to complete in a short period of time, but also matched to the level of the respondent to whom they were sent. The number of responses was capped to thirty people, all of whom were contacted beforehand to discuss the questionnaire, and where the response was favourable, a copy was sent out to their address. This method of introduction of the questionnaire was done for several reasons: to make introductions, to talk through the questionnaire to avoid possible confusion of any area, to pre-warn the recipient of the forthcoming delivery and to help guarantee the full return of completed questionnaires.
The design of the questionnaire has been set out over twelve questions, with the first four being specifically about the basics of the product approval mechanism. The intention of the questions in this first part was to ascertain the level of appreciation within the professional groups. Additional boxes to each question were given so that the respondent could give further reasoning/insight into why they selected a particular answer.
The second part of the questionnaire, i.e., question number five and beyond, was a rewording of question one, but giving the problems associated with the case study as the premise.
