The first sheet on the top of a seemingly endless stack dictates the initial installation instructions, and with knowledge wielded confidently, the guru goes to work. Installed, says the brightly lit screen, and with one quick click of the executable file, the opening title screen transitions into the startup arena, a brightly blinking cursor alone and vague on a green screen. Now what? The instruction manual seems to be written in a Greek dialect long since forgotten and the guru's hands begin to shake.
It is the assimilation of modern programming languages into a world of drafting and database management which oftentimes discourages SME's and even larger construction corporations from purchasing the premier software on the market. Their fears, rightly founded on a lack of education and training, are justifiable given the previous computer based requirements on their team which were primarily based in the basic operating system and e-mail of their current computers. So, do they send one employee with apparent aptitude for study and comprehension of this field to school for further instruction? Perhaps they attempt to hire a professional who can join their company with the knowledge already pre-instilled through the higher education he has completed. What would the costs be for someone with this knowledge and would it be cheaper to have one of their own employees trained on company time?
It is the multitude of questioning which SME's embark upon which often limits their ability to assimilate the newest information technology. Sometimes, it is the lack of education inherent in the owners or managers themselves which limits this acceptance to the re-definition of the construction industry. Regardless, the education level required to utilize most construction based programs is higher than the average desk jockey's previous training has provided, and therefore, future education must be considered when evaluating the efficacy of the project.
Training
Often associated with education, training presents an effective method of programming language comprehension and utilization. Typically offered through the companies selling the software, in-depth training utilizing similar project based models offers a very specific, highly technical introspection into the purchased software. Companies often gear this training and support to the specificity of the industry for which they are producing their programs. In this way, it becomes much easier for educated professionals to quickly pick up the drafting and project management basics in order to implement them almost immediately.
Oftentimes, on the job training is a possibility, and professional technicians are sent to the location in order to work directly in the environment in which the products will be used.
