The examination with utilize a SLEPT analysis, along with the ‘Building Research Environmental Assessment Method' (BREEAM) and EcoHomes, which is the domestic version of the preceding that is applied to both private and social housing schemes. The preceding shall seek to uncover the varied requirements and rules that will make homes achieve the sustainable designation, and thus the barriers that the United Kingdom housing industry has and will have to overcome to meet this standard.

Chapter 1 Introduction
The foundational aspects regarding the background of the beginnings of sustainable development represent an important foundation via which to understand the external concepts and context that leads to the underpinnings whereby one can understand the varied dynamics impacting the housing sector in the United Kingdom in attempting to achieve the objective of sustainable housing. The UK strategy under its sustainable development programme, details the government's plans focusing upon four agreed priorities (HM Government, 2005) which are in consort with the broad United Nations, Brundtland Report (Federal Office for Spatial Development, 2007), ‘2005' World Summit Outcome' (United Nations General Assembly, 2005) and ‘Renewed EU Sustainable Development Strategy (Council of the European Union, 2006):

climate change,
natural resource protection, and
sustainable communities
A report issued by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF, 2003a) pointed out the significance in the reduction of the environmental impact of UK homes as representing a critical aspect in the achievement of sustainable development on a broader scale. It indicated that the majority of homes in the United Kingdom have high contents of toxic materials that represent significant social and environmental impacts . The report further identified that homes in the United Kingdom use significantly more energy than their counterparts in Denmark and Germany, indicating that said usage is on average three and one half times higher in consumption (WWF, 2003a). Projections indicate that the United Kingdom will construct approximately four million new residential dwellings during the next twenty years (TCPA, 2002). Given the present statistics concerning the use of toxic materials, poor energy utilization and better use of newer environmentally friendly materials, the significance of the proceeding is sizeable in terms of the goal of achieving sustainable housing. The foregoing also means the incorporation of new building techniques that utilize known weather, sun arch, material composition, mass and related facets in the design and construction process.
