It is also apparent that the changing environment of virtual workspace is making comparisons with manual drafting techniques increasingly irrelevant. The once sturdy pencil of the professional drafter has been since replaced by very defined mouse clicks and in depth code analysis in order to represent the most exacting and efficient design tool for the construction of a building or structure. Elimination of one career has given way to creation of countless others as building programs revolve around the entire scope of the project, oftentimes requiring the approval and support of the entire crew to develop accurate time frames and supply chain information.
SME: Neither Large, Nor Formidable, Just Successful
Many times confused with an entrepreneurial relevance in the commercial society, the
SME (small-to-medium enterprise) is a convenient term for segmenting businesses and other organizations that are somewhere between the "small office-home office size and the larger enterprise. The European Union has defined an SME as a legally independent company with no more than 500 employees. What does this mean then for a construction company to be segmented into an SME? First and foremost, the overall communicative and information resource power is mitigated simply due to size and connectivity. Again, the doorway for IT necessity is opened in this case simply by a minimal database of resources. Secondly, throughout history, SME's have often represented very specified industry, many times fulfilling roles in society where larger companies chose not to infiltrate. Examples may be a particular company of highly skilled machinists who have chosen to limit their production in order to specialize in their trade and hopefully corner the market in that area of specificity.
Traditionally, workers within these smaller hybridized industries included a key component of improvisation as part of their production activitythe success of these SME's was in direct opposition to classical assertions that efficiency is directly related to the divisions in labor. The historical perspective, therefore, was to maintain a combined force within a smaller entity in order to minimize confusion or conflict within ideas and solutions. Variation on the division of labor has continued to increase with the addition of technological advance, oftentimes removing the SME's from the field due to the assimilation of tasks into the enabled automated systems. Re-defining the relationship of the SME to the mega corporations is key to the success of these unique entities. It is imperative that their management of the IT specifics in today's construction community become their famed efficiency claims as they attempt to reap the benefit within the wings of larger, more powerful magnates.
