3.2RICS and RIBA female membership
In Architecture and Surveying statistics have been slowly increasing. Currently women account for 11% of RIBA chartered architects (U.W.E). The membership of the Royal Institute of British Architects has been rising over the last ten years from 26,513 in 1983/4 (5.6%) to 27,940 in 1991/2 (7%).
According to statistics by the RICS of 110,000 chartered surveyors worldwide, only 10 % are women (www.prospects.ac.uk). When comparing total membership of the R.I.C.S and the R.I.B.A to that of other professions connected with the construction industry it was noted that these two bodies had the second and third highest number of members (see Fig 1.0).

However, when these numbers were broken down into percentages of women membership the figures changed considerably with the R.I.C.S and the R.I.B.A having the lowest percentages of women. (See Figs 1.2 and 1.3).
