How It Works Pre-fabricated Modules Are Designed By Architects And Are ...

How it works
Pre-fabricated modules are designed by architects and are customisable by computer. There are a number of factory units where modules are produced. A family-sized dwelling will typically be manufactured in four modules plus roof module(s). Modules can be stacked to create stories or blocks of flats. After the unit is set on the foundation, the house is almost complete. The time in which assembly is complete depends on how much the modules are customised and how long it takes to connect the dwelling to its utilities. Normal timeframes tend to be a few days to a week.

Examples of Off-site Companies and Organisations
Space4: a construction manufacturing company
Set up in 1995, this module production company worked with Warwick University in order to establish the best communications and practice for integrating the areas of industrial manufacturing - on an intensive scale - into the construction industry. In 2001 the company launched the Space4 system - Patrick Dormon, MD of the company is quoted as saying the following about Space 4:.
We purposely developed Space4 with the underlying principle of not blindly maximising the factory content but to provide the cost effective balance of factory manufactured elements which dove-tail with site finishing trades, making them easier and more efficient. (http://www.space4.co.uk/aboutus/index.htm).
Space4 has an annual output of over 6000 units
During the initial five years of its business Space4 supplied 10,000 buildings
It has a CAD/CAM database containing hundreds of house designs. This allows any existing design to be adapted to suit the needs of individual companies or home owners.
Space4 reassures their customer that the construction process is straightforward and fast, with a guaranteed ‘rapid construction of a structural shell and roof.' (http://www.space4.co.uk/aboutus/index.htm)
