Hypothesis
This hypothesis will be used in order to assess the environmental impact of applying polyurethane board as an insulating material to new buildings.
Rigid Board Insulation: is it really contributing to reducing CO2 emissions, and thus to reducing the occurrence of damaging greenhouse gases in the environment?
Methodology
The author decided that, when assessing the environmental impact of using a particular type of insulation, the research must not only focus on this insulation but must also concentrate on an assessment of the global context and legislation behind the use of such insulation in new buildings. The contribution of polyurethane boards to reduce CO2 emissions not only relates to fuel preservation, but it also forms part of the concept of sustainability. The Brundtland Commision (1987) defined sustainability as, development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs.
As this definition of sustainability is broad, the author decided that primary and secondary research would focus on the following objectives: developing an understanding of the concept of sustainable development and energy preservation; understanding the UK Government's effort at tackling global warming issues, with a focus on thermal insulation; assessing the embodied energy versus energy savings in rigid board insulations.
The Methodology chosen to complete this mission will comprise of: 1) A detailed literature search on the subject area; 2) An indication of the population and sample; 3) A decision on, and the design of, the research instrument; 4) A pilot study to establish the validity of the instrument, with a review of this study, as necessary; 5) The collection of qualitative data against objectives through a questionnaire and a case study; 6) An analysis of the data against the findings of the Literature Review and the objectives; 7) A presentation of the Conclusions from the research; and 8) Identification of the weaknesses in the Literature Review and the Methodology used in the research, followed by suggestions for further research.
The Literature Review will be a compilation of data obtained from studying a range of sources from academic journals, professional journals, relevant magazine articles, newspaper articles, industry books and reports. These sources will be referenced in the relevant section of the dissertation. The case study used in this dissertation will present an example of the application of polyurethane boards together with other eco-innovations, which, together, contribute to a reduction of emissions of CO2. The author has chosen, as the case study, to concentrate on the prefabricated ‘Tek House' system manufactured by one of the leaders of the insulation industry.
