Conclusion
The UK has made a big step in reducing emissions of CO2 through the following actions: 1) implementing policy related to the promises made, internationally, in light of the Kyoto protocol; 2) implementing this policy via building controls, through new Building Regulations; and 3) creating advisories and consultancies where people (businesses) can go to get advice about building in a sustainable manner.
It could be argued, however, that not enough has been done by the UK Government to achieve sustainability in the construction industry, and to minimise CO2 emissions from buildings within the UK. The standards required are the only minimum standards, and much more could be achieved in particular with regards to application of insulation to old and new buildings alike.
Chapter 4 The Truth Behind Embodied Energy versus Potential Energy Savings
Introduction
The only way to successfully reduce the costs of heating is through minimising heat loss and conserving energy from within a building is to incorporate good thermal insulation around the buildings walls and base. In this way, maximising the heat insulation of the building, less energy will be needed to heat the building, and the building will be more sustainable, in terms of generating less CO2 and contributing less to the Greenhouse effect.
The easiest solution to reduce CO2 emissions: rigid board insulation.
It is a common misconception that thermal insulation warms a building by generating its own heat. This is not the case! Insulators reduce heat loss by insulating against this. Most insulation products reduce conduction and convection elements by the cellular structure of their material, and in order to reduce heat transfer by conduction, an insulator should have a thin wall matrix, with a structure of a cellular nature or with a high void content. Rigid board insulation completes these requirements as it is cellular in construction with a high void content, and, as such, acts as a very efficient insulator.
Embodied energy versus energy in use
The embodied energy of rigid board insulation is small in comparison with long-term energy savings, and, as such, rigid board insulation is a good insulating material that can be used with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions from buildings, in terms of reducing the amount of energy that is needed to heat the building.
