Chapter 4 again presents a Literature Review in order to investigate the key hypothesis, which is to assess the environmental impact of applying polyurethane board as an insulating material to the house. This Chapter begins by describing thermal insulation characteristics and its contribution to human comfort. The Chapter then moves on to explain the processes involved in the production of polyurethane boards and the impact on environment of its production, with focus on the production of greenhouse gases. In addition, the Chapter also assesses the ecological balance of insulating with rigid boards, in the form of a comparison of embodied energy versus lifetime energy savings. The Chapter concludes that the benefits of polyurethane insulation are much greater than the drawbacks, such that this method of insulation could be a solution for global warming in terms of reducing the burning of fossil fuels for heating in housing.
Chapter 5 presents the Research Methodology, first reiterating the research aim, the objectives and the hypothesis of the dissertation, and then and explaining the context for these. The Chapter then moves on to present the program of research, with a discussion of the primary and secondary data collection, with an indication of population and sample.
Chapter 6 presents an analysis of the results, discussing, firstly, the processing of the data and outlining the initial findings from the research. The results from the primary research are compared against the findings from the Literature Review, in the form of awareness of regulations and practical conformation to the regulations on site. The findings from that comparison are discussed with a particular focus on the third objective, and those findings are again compared with the Literature Review.
Chapter 7 presents the Conclusions from the research conducted, and the overall conclusions for the dissertation, drawing together the research findings, and comparing them against the stated objectives and the hypothesis. The overall conclusion to the dissertation is that polyurethane insulation is a great material, and the benefits of using it to reduce the heating requirements of a building far outweigh the embodied energy involved in the process of manufacturing and using this method of insulation. The Conclusions also suggest that, even if international agreements are in place to provide foundations for legislation, the implementation of this legislation is not sufficient to tackle the problem adequately, as there are practical problems in ensuring such legislation, in terms of ensuring it is adhered to and put in to practice.
