In addition to the case study, primary data collection was utilised through the use of a questionnaire-based survey. The initial plan was to conduct various sets of questionnaires, addressed to different parties involved in construction industry, however, due to the time constraints for completion of this project, and also due to the fact that great ideas often reach little businesses slowly, the author decided to address the survey to ten small contractors, with the aim of collecting qualitative data on the objectives of these businesses in terms of their use of insulation. The questionnaire was, practically, performed in the form of an interview.
The businesses selected to take part in the survey were chosen due to the fact that most of their building projects were refurbishments, which thus require compliance with the requirements of the building regulations. Complying with these regulations is not always easy, but not all inspectors are pedantic and so the author thought that this would provide a broad snapshot of industry compliance with current environmental requirements.
Scope
The scope of the remaining chapters, included within this dissertation is as follows. Chapter 2 presents the Literature Review, and essentially comprises of an investigation of objective one, which is an understanding of the basis for the concept of sustainable development and energy preservation. This Chapter begins by discussing the problem of global warming and the Greenhouse effect. The Chapter then moves on to look at the consequences for the human population of Earth resulting from the Greenhouse effect. A discussion of the contribution of the housing sector to the process of global warming is then presented. This Chapter concludes that, according to the literature, the human race is directly responsible for the Greenhouse effect. A large proportion of this contribution is due to inadequate insulation within buildings, and the consequent need to use excessive amounts of heating, which uses energy and causes CO2 emissions, contributing to a rise in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and to a worsening of the Greenhouse effect.
Chapter 3 also presents a Literature Review, and investigates objective two, which is to explain the efforts put in place by the UK Government to tackle global warming issues, with a focus on the relevant legislation and its implementation. This Chapter begins by explaining international involvement in global warming issues, and then moves on to look at UK legislation, by means of its implementation with a focus on difficulties in controlling building projects. In addition, this Chapters also explains the involvement of non government organisations (NGOs) such as BRE in addressing the problem of CO2 emissions.
