This is somewhat disquieting because of the expectation of a specialised institute to have better figures than the regional average. Apart from the overall picture, (compared to those for local demographics), figures for most areas of learning, apart from AL1 and AL6, are significantly better than national averages and in line with local demographics.

The figures for local demographics for different ALs are all the same, indicating the use of the overall figure for all sub groups, a factor which makes comparisons inappropriate and misleading.

Recruitment figures for people from black and ethnic minorities, at 40 %, is higher than comparable figures for company average, local demographics, and national WBL.

This is probably because Birmingham has a much higher percentage of blacks and Asians than other major cities in the country.

This factor is reflected across the board apart from AL 6, i.e, Information and Communication Technology, where the figures for JHP, at 22 %, are significantly lesser than the national average of 50 %. This is intriguing and needs further investigation. Relevant pie charts for all learners and for AL 6 are as under.

Overall recruitment figures for females and males for JHP indicate a ratio of 65/35 compared to the national figure of 38.2/61.8 and local demographics of 51.6/48.4. The JHP figure of 35/65 probably indicates the greater incidence of women following vocational careers in urban centres compared to overall countrywide figures, an argument supported by the local demographic figures also being higher than the country average.

Figures for recruitment of females for JHP are also significantly lower than the national average for AL 6 (Information and Communication Technology) and AL 7 (Retail and Commercial Enterprise). These figures for are surprising and possibly need detailed investigation. Figures for local demographics are not available separately for different Areas of Learning and, as such, do not help in analysis or assessment.
