The Key Areas Of Professional Services Have Increased From The Traditional ...

The key areas of professional services have increased from the traditional approach to the implementation of the system and staff training as argued by Enid Mumford (2006). It is also evident that the lean management approach and the increase in the dependency of organizations on outsourcing the IT related services are the key drivers for the growth in the professional services business of the IT sector as argued by Emma Wiggin (2007).

The arguments of Emma Wiggin (2007) that the increase in the contract hire of IT specialists to deliver specific services by companies pioneering in IT business services delivery is the justification for the tremendous growth of the professional services segment of the IT development and services business. This further justifies that the professional services organizations in the west plays a critical role in the performance of an organization depending on information technology to support the core business process.

Thus it is evident from the above review on the concept of professional services in the IT industry is mainly to render an agreed service to enhance or support the core business process of another organization that does uses IT to support its core business process.

2.2: Why Processional Services?

John Ward and Joe Peppard (2003) argue that the information technology growth and development is increasing in geometric progression and hence the strategic decision on a specific IT system or service to use by an organization depends primarily on the key business requirements and the availability of funds for investment. Alongside it is worth mentioning that the use of information technology by companies that do not use IT as core business predominantly depend upon the technology to support the business process as mentioned above and hence the expertise in the technology for development and maintenance is not essential to run the business as argued by Gerry Johnson and Kevan Scholes (2003). Thus to that the organization's core business is supported with the relevant technology, the outsourcing of the IT related development and consecutive support is one of the major drivers for the rise of professional services as a key business segment in the information technology business of the global market.

Alongside, the cost reduction approach and the availability of affordable resources from the Far East with the relevant expertise is another critical element that fuelled the growth of the professional services industry and increased its role in the support of core business as argued by John Ward and Joe Peppard (2003). The fact that the portability of the technology is one of the key aspects that contributes to the distributed nature of the overall information technology development and implementation business as argued by Efrium Turban et al (2004).
